South African international striker Philemon Masinga has hung up his boots.


The 32-year-old striker, who played for English Premiership side Leeds United in 1994, has announced he is quitting because of injury.


Masinga, South Africa's international leading scorer until he was overtaken by Charlton Athletic's Shaun Bartlett, hurt his knee while playing for United Arab Emirates club Al-Wahda.


He was on a six-month contract with Al-Wahda for whom he scored two goals in three games.


"I've been operated on both knees already," said Masinga. "So when I picked up this injury, I realised that perhaps this was a sign that the time has come to bow out of the game I love so much."


He revealed the knee problems started while he was still playing for Italian side Bari.


"I've been playing through the pain because Bari where in trouble and I felt the need to help them survive in Serie A."
