A Yorkshire MEP has kicked off the latest stage of his campaign to reverse one of the greatest injustices in Leeds United's history.

Richard Corbett has been a long-time supporter of calls for an inquiry into United's infamous defeat against AC Milan in the 1973 European Cup Winners' Cup final.

The game was marred by a bizarre series of refereeing decisions which led to allegations of match-fixing.

Now Mr Corbett has launched an online petition which he hopes will belatedly persuade European football's governing body, UEFA, to look into the corruption claims.

And he says if any evidence emerges that the game WAS rigged, then the result should be overturned and Leeds named as that year's winner of the competition.

Mr Corbett, a Labour member of the European Parliament for Yorkshire and the Humber, said: "Bribery in sport is clearly unacceptable at any level.

"If football in Europe is to retain its integrity, UEFA must show its commitment to fair play."

Mr Corbett plans to present the petition to UEFA on May 16, the 26th anniversary of United's final defeat.

He has written to all the surviving members of that night's Leeds side asking them to add their names to his list.

United were denied a string of clear penalties in the match, held in the Greek city of Salonika.

The game ended with the local referee being jeered by his fellow countrymen in the crowd. He was later suspended by UEFA and his own national association.
