WOODGATE JAW BROKEN IN ATTACK
SHAMED Leeds United footballer Jonathan Woodgate has had his jaw broken in
an attack, the club said today.

The defender had surgery to reset the jaw following the attack on Tuesday
night and is out for the rest of the football season, club chairman Peter
Ridsdale said.

Woodgate had returned to action for the club following the conclusion of his
court case at the end of last year when he was found guilty of affray
relating to an incident in Leeds city centre in January 2000.

Woodgate, club eikä Woodyn perhe halua kommentoida muuta. Tutkimuksia ei ole tulossa tällä erää.

Voi helv... f... sh..

Mut sen kimppuun oli hyökätty. *** (tässä oli jotain asiantonta)

Okei, oli ollut horseplay with the friend.

Woodgate is injured in street attack

SHAMED Leeds United defender Jonathan Woodgate was in hospital last night
with a broken jaw after a violent incident following a pub crawl in his home
town of Middlesbrough.

Woodgate, convicted of affray in December after he was part of a group
involved in a savage assault on an Asian student, underwent surgery for a
"very serious" break to his jaw suffered during a street attack outside a
bar.

Although the club said last night there was no evidence Woodgate had
initiated Tuesday night's events, sources at the club made clear his Leeds
career would be over if he was found to be responsible.

The exact sequence of the night's events remained unclear last night.

However, violence appeared to have broken out at the end of a drinking
session with a group of friends during the player's day off.

Cleveland police said they had received no reports of an attack on Woodgate.

The club also said that it was still in the dark over the details of what
exactly happened.

Leeds United chairman Peter Ridsdale told the Yorkshire Post: "We have no
idea what happened, only that there has been some sort of incident in
Middlesbrough.

"The club only found out when we were contacted by his (Woodgate's)
solicitor and agent this morning.

"There is no suggestion that he initiated any problems or is any trouble
himself. Jonathan is in Middlesbrough General Hospital with a very serious
break to his jaw which will see him out of action for the rest of the
season."

He added: "The family are at his bedside and have not said anything to the
club beyond the statement which the club has put out.

"I'm not sure if he has come round from his operation yet but clearly he is
not in a position to say anything to anyone at present."

Leeds manager David O'Leary refused to comment on the incident, but is
understood to have ordered a thorough investigation and will demand an
explanation from Woodgate when he is released from hospital.

The attack – which will keep Woodgate off the pitch for the rest of the
season – is the latest in a catalogue of disasters affecting the career of
the volatile 22-year-old.

Woodgate was left in disgrace following his conviction for affray for which
he was sentenced to 100 hours' community service.

Hull Crown Court heard how student Sarfraz Najeib was left scarred for life
when he was bitten on the face by Woodgate's friend, Paul Clifford, during
violence which broke out in Leeds city centre. Woodgate was cleared of
assaulting Mr Najeib.

Mr Najeib's family has said however that it will include Woodgate in a civil
action which will also cite Leeds United for allegedly failing to control
its players.

Following the court case – which inflicted serious damage on the club's
reputation – Woodgate was offered a five-year contract worth almost £20,000
a week to stay at Elland Road.

However, a condition of that contract was that Woodgate must move away from
Middlesbrough and find a home close to the club's training ground at Thorp
Arch.

Mr Ridsdale confirmed yesterday that "Jonathan was due to move into a new
flat near Wetherby next week".

Leeds are prepared to give Woodgate the benefit of the doubt until the full
facts emerge, but if he is found to be to blame for the disturbance, or to
have contributed to it, he could be placed on the transfer list.

O'Leary has made it clear he is not prepared to sit back and allow players
to continue to let the club down with ill-disciplined acts.

Tuesday night's incident took place after the footballer had been drinking
with friends in a busy student pub, The House, in Middlesbrough's Linthorpe
Road, where it is understood he had been watching the Liverpool-Bayern
Leverkeusen European clash.

Maureen Heffernan, director of communications for the Laurel Pub Company,
which owns the pub, said the Leeds defender had drunk a couple of pints
before leaving and said the group had all been well-behaved.

"We have never had any trouble with him. He doesn't drink to excess at all.
He was just on a night out with some friends," she said.

Another member of staff at the pub said he believed Woodgate and his friends
had then moved on to a bar 50 yards up the road called The Mojo Cafe.

Reports last night indicated the attack happened at the rear of the
premises. The two-storey bar remained locked last night and there were no
lights on.

Last night, local drinkers claimed to have seen the soccer star drinking in
the Dickens Green pub on Field Road before the attack happened.

But pub manager Chris Nichol said he had not seen Woodgate with his friends
on Tuesday night, although he said the Leeds defender had been in on several
occasions before.

Mr Nichol said: "I have seen him a few times but I haven't seen him for a
while in here."

Meanwhile, another establishment where Woodgate is thought to have been on
Tuesday prior to the attack still remained closed last night.

Earlier in the afternoon the player and a group of friends were seen in the
Brunton Arms on Gypsy Lane in Marton, close to the Middlesbrough suburb of
Nunthorpe, where his parents live.

A member of staff was reluctant to divulge details of how much the men had
had to drink.

It remained unclear last night why the police had not become involved
following the attack and why no complaint appeared to have been made.

A spokesman for Cleveland Police said last night: "At this time there has
been no report of an assault on Jonathan Woodgate to Cleveland Police."

The latest blow to Leeds United emerged when Woodgate failed to appear at
Harrogate Court yesterday to face his second speeding charge in a matter of
days.

He had been due to answer a summons for driving his silver BMW at 91mph in
North Yorkshire in July last year. His solicitor Nick Freeman would only
tell the court that his client was unable to attend because he had been
"anaesthetised" and would "shortly be put on the operating table".

He was banned from driving in his absence for six months and fined £600 with
£750 costs. The ban will run concurrently with a six-month ban imposed after
he was caught driving at 97mph along the A19 at Barrowby, near Thirsk.

Mr Freeman changed Woodgate's plea to guilty minutes before the expected
trial.

Only two weeks ago, Richmond Magistrates' chairman Kate Fox labelled
Woodgate a "persistent speeder" when she disqualified him for six months,
imposed a £500 fine and ordered him to pay £250 costs. Mr Freeman confirmed
Woodgate would drop the appeal he had lodged against the six months
disqualification imposed at Richmond.

A statement from the club stated: "Leeds United can confirm Jonathan
Woodgate has undergone an operation after sustaining a broken jaw in an
attack on Tuesday night. He will not be available for the remainder of this
season. Jonathan Woodgate and his family do not wish to make any comment."

Lehdistö on aika tyylikkäästi taas vauhdissa, suurinpiirtein joka lehdessä eri selitys tuosta leuan murtumisesta ::) Pitää nyt kuitenkin toivoa, että Woody oppii vielä jossain vaiheessa pitämään itsensä poissa hankaluuksista :)
