TERRY VENABLES' troubled reign at Elland Road today came to a close.


United chairman Peter Ridsdale made an announcement to the Stock Exchange confirming Venables' departure from the club.
The parting of the ways was decided at a meeting between the two at Elland Road yesterday afternoon. As revealed in last night's YEP the United board were becoming increasingly concerned by the club's poor run of form and were keen to make moves to arrest the slide.
The former England boss is paying the price for a campaign that sees United lying in 15th spot in the Premiership, just seven points above the relegation zone with eight games remaining.
The club hope today's announcement will go some way to safeguarding United's Premiership status.
Venables has been at the helm for just eight months and United have won only 10 of their 30 Premiership matches. They also suffered two humiliating defeats to first division Sheffield United in the Worthington Cup and the FA Cup.
Long-serving assistant Eddie Gray will now take temporary charge of team affairs and will be at the helm for Sunday's all-important trip to Liverpool.
United are not expected to make any permanent appointment until the summer.
Former player Micky Adams, Paul Hart and Gordon Strachan are all being touted as possible successors.

Gray favourite to become permanent Leeds boss

Eddie Gray has been installed as 5/1 favourite by William Hill to become
permanent manager of Leeds United.

Leicester boss Micky Adams and Nottingham Forest manager Paul Hart are at
6/1 - both are ex-Leeds players - with Brian Kidd at 7/1 and Martin O'Neill 8/1.

Peter Reid and ex-Leeds player Gordon Strachan are both at 12/1, while Alan
Curbishley and Paul Jewell are at 16/1.

George Graham is at 20/1 to make a return to Leeds. Steve Cotterill, Gary Megson
and Jean Tigana share the same odds.

Ex-Leeds manager Howard Wilkinson is tipped to return at odds of 25/1.

Sven Goran Eriksson is at 33/1 while David O'Leary's odds of a quick comeback
are 50/1.

Eddie Gray was in charge of Leeds from July 1982 to October 1985 - out of 151
games, he won 55, lost 42 and drew 54, according to Soccerbase.

Rukoukseni siis vihdoinkin kuultiin ja Venables sai lähteä. Kyllä kai se niinpäin oli, että se lähetettiin... Torstai-iltana hypin jo kattoon, ku kuulin uutiset sen lähdöstä. Me ollaan putoamisviivan lähellä, tommosta ei oo tapahtunu miesmuistiin. Taas kerran voin sanoa, että voihan nenä, aavistukseni kävivät tosiin. Ikävä kyllä.

Peter Reid on haastatteluissa saanu kyllä mun sympatiat. Mut 8 peliä edessä, eikä mitään muuta toivoa ole, kuin että säilyttäisiin Valioliigassa.

Yks ongelma on onneks ratkaistu: Mä olen ottanu kuvia mun digikameralla, mut kauden alussa multa kiellettiin se, koska Stewards ei tajunnu, että se EI ollu video cam. Mut mä vaadin sen testattavaksi, ja ne sitte kattoi ja mä selitin, ja sain takaisin lupani. (on se perkele, siellä on jengiä mitkä ottaa kuvaa noilla pienillä uudenaikaisilla kameroilla/puhelimilla, mut niistä ei sanota mitään, ku ne ei sitä tajuu - siis stewards). Mut siis kaikki okei siltä osin.
